Rose City Tonic Slow Cooker Italian Braised Short Ribs

Rose City Tonic Slow Cooker Italian Braised Short Ribs:

We love showing you unique ways to use our syrups. Whether it’s a twist on a classic drink, or something totally out of left field, we want you to feel comfortable flexing your creative muscle when using our products. This week we wanted to showcase the versatility of our Rose City Tonic Syrup, so we decided to show you how to incorporate it into a slow cooker meal!

It’s common practice in many recipes to use citrus fruit or something bitter, like olives, as part of your braising liquid. In this case, we decided to use our tonic syrup as a solution to adding both a citrus and a bitter component.

PREP: 30 MINS   //   YIELD: 6-8 Wings
INGREDIENTS
| Medium yellow onion, diced
| 8 cloves of garlic, thinly sliced
| 3 tbls tomato paste
| 2 tbls olive oil
1 tsp oregano
1 1 tsp red pepper flakes
28 ounce can of whole peeled/drained tomatoes
| 1 1/2 tbls Rose City Tonic
|   2 1/2 lbs bone-in short ribs (about 5 ribs)
|   Salt & pepper

DIRECTIONS

Combine onion, garlic, tomato paste, oil, oregano, and red pepper flakes in a pan on medium heat until onions are soft and fragrant (about 5 min). Once cooked, pour mixture into slow cooker, along with tomatoes and tonic syrup. Lastly, salt and pepper all sides of the ribs then tuck them into the slow cooker with the other ingredients. Cover with lid and cook on low for 8 hours (or high for 4-5). Once the ribs are finished cooking, remove them and set them aside, covering with foil. With a slotted spoon, remove all tomatoes, onions, and garlic out of the slow cooker and set aside. Pour the remaining liquid into a bowl for about 5 minutes. After the liquid has sat for a few minutes, you’ll see that the fat has collected on top. Spoon the fat off and discard. Lastly, put the tomatoes and some of the garlic and onion back into the empty slow cooker. Mash with the back of your spoon, then pour the sauce in, mixing well. You’re now ready to plate up your ribs! We served ours on mashed butternut squash and braised collard greens. Spoon the sauce over the ribs, garnish with some freshly chopped basil and parsley and enjoy!
